So you’re visiting London for the first time. Brilliant — you’re going to love it. But London is enormous, and it does things differently from anywhere in the States. The plugs are different, the money is different, the pubs work differently, and there’s an entire underground railway network that has its own unspoken rules.

As an Englishman who grew up here, I’ve written this guide to cover everything you need to know before you arrive — the practical stuff that most travel guides skip because they assume you already know it. You don’t. And that’s fine. That’s what this is for.

UK Entry Requirements: Passports, Visas and ETA

Most US citizens visiting London for a short tourism trip do not need a UK visa, but they do need an approved electronic travel authorisation (ETA) unless an exemption applies. Visa-free travel does not mean you can travel without an ETA.

Apply through the official GOV.UK website or the official UK ETA app before travelling. The current application fee is £20. You will need the passport you plan to travel with, an email address and a payment method.

Exemptions include British and Irish citizens and people who already have a UK visa or permission to live, work or study in the UK. Other exemptions can apply, so check the official guidance for your circumstances.

When to Visit London

London is a year-round city, but your experience varies dramatically by season. Best time for first-timers: May-June or September. The weather is pleasant, days are long, and crowds are slightly smaller than peak July-August. Avoid January-February unless you love cold, dark days — though hotel prices are at their lowest.

Rain reality: London gets about 659mm (26 inches) of rain per year — less than New York City (1,268mm). It’s not the amount of rain that gets you, it’s the unpredictability. It can be sunny, pouring, and sunny again within an hour. Always carry a compact umbrella.

For your first visit, I’d recommend at least 4-5 days. London is bigger than you think, and everything takes longer than expected — queues, Tube journeys, walking between sights. Three days is doable but you’ll be moving fast.

Before You Leave Home

What to Pack

Plug adapters: The UK uses Type G plugs (three rectangular pins). This is different from the US, different from Europe. Buy one before you arrive — they’re expensive at the airport. If you have multiple devices, bring a power strip from home and plug the whole strip into one UK adapter.
Comfortable shoes: You will walk 15,000-25,000 steps per day in London. This is not an exaggeration. Sneakers or walking shoes, not fashion shoes.
Layers: London weather changes constantly. A light jacket or cardigan you can take off and carry is essential, even in summer. Mornings can be cool, afternoons warm, evenings cool again.
Compact umbrella: Not a golf umbrella — something that fits in a bag or coat pocket. You’ll use it.
Contactless card: Make sure your credit/debit card has a contactless (tap-to-pay) symbol. This is how you’ll pay for all public transport. Apple Pay and Google Pay also work.
Passport: Passport and entry permission: Bring the passport you will travel with, and obtain an approved UK ETA before travelling if required. Check the official entry requirements for your nationality and circumstances..

What to Book Before You Arrive

Book these in advance — don’t wait until you’re in London:

Sky Garden — Free, but tickets sell out. Released every Monday morning for the following three weeks at skygarden.london. Book the moment your dates enter the window.
Westminster Abbey — £31 online at westminster-abbey.org. Skip the queue.
Tower of London — £37 at hrp.org.uk/tower-of-london.
Free museums — The British Museum, Natural History Museum, and V&A all require free timed entry tickets on weekends. Book at britishmuseum.org, nhm.ac.uk, and vam.ac.uk.
Restaurants — Dishoom, Hawksmoor, and any Michelin-starred restaurant. Book 2-4 weeks ahead via their websites or opentable.co.uk.
West End shows — Book at officiallondontheatre.com or visit the TKTS booth in Leicester Square for last-minute discounted tickets.

Getting from the Airport to Central London

London has six airports. You’ll most likely arrive at Heathrow or Gatwick.

From Heathrow (LHR) — 14 miles west of central London

From Gatwick (LGW) — 30 miles south of central London

Tip: Contactless cards and Oyster work on all trains from Heathrow and Gatwick. Just tap in at the airport station and tap out at your destination. You won’t pay more than the daily cap for the zones you travel through (£16.30 if coming from Zone 6/Heathrow).

Getting Around London

The Tube (London Underground)

The Tube is the fastest and cheapest way around London. It runs from about 5:00 AM to midnight Monday-Saturday, and from 7:00 AM to 11:30 PM on Sundays. Some lines run 24 hours on Friday and Saturday nights (Night Tube).

How to pay: Tap your contactless card, phone, or watch on the yellow reader at the start and end of every journey. That’s it. No tickets, no machines, no apps.

Fares (2026, frozen until March 2027):

Zone 1-2 single: £2.70 (~$3.60)
Zone 1-2 daily cap: £8.90 (~$12) — you’ll never pay more than this per day
Weekly cap (Mon-Sun): £44.70 (~$60)

Never buy paper tickets — they cost up to double the contactless fare.

Peak vs off-peak: Peak is 6:30-9:30 AM and 4:00-7:00 PM weekdays. Off-peak fares are cheaper. But with the daily cap, it mostly doesn’t matter — you’ll hit the cap eventually and the rest of the day is free.

Tube rules every Londoner follows:

Stand on the right on escalators. Walk on the left. This is non-negotiable — standing on the left will get you tutted at, or worse.
Let people off before you get on. Stand to the side of the doors, not in front of them.
Don’t talk loudly. Londoners read, scroll their phones, or stare into space on the Tube. Loud conversations are frowned upon.
Move down the carriage. If there’s space further inside, move there. Don’t cluster by the doors.
Have your card ready at the barrier. Fumbling for your wallet while 20 people queue behind you is a sin.

Buses

Buses are cheaper than the Tube (£1.75 flat fare, daily cap £5.25) and you see the city. The red double-decker is a London icon — sit upstairs at the front for the best views.

Tap your contactless card when you board. You don’t tap when you get off. One tap = one journey, regardless of distance.

Walking

London is more walkable than you’d think for a city of 9 million people. Many central sights are closer together than they appear on the Tube map — Covent Garden to Trafalgar Square is a 5-minute walk, but on the Tube map it looks like a journey. Use Google Maps or Citymapper to check walking times — sometimes walking is faster than the Tube.

Taxis and Ubers

Black cabs: Iconic, knowledgeable drivers (they pass “The Knowledge” — memorising every street in London). Expensive but reliable. Hail them on the street (orange light = available).
Uber/Bolt: Cheaper than black cabs, available everywhere. Download the app before you arrive.
Don’t rent a car. London has a congestion charge (£15/day), ULEZ charge (£12.50/day for non-compliant vehicles), and parking is expensive and scarce. You don’t need a car.

Money

Currency

The UK uses the British Pound Sterling (£). As of July 2026, £1 ≈ $1.34. Check the current rate before your trip at xe.com.

Cards vs Cash

London is nearly cashless. You can pay with a card or phone almost everywhere — restaurants, pubs, shops, markets, even street performers have card readers. You don’t need to carry large amounts of cash.

Bring a credit card with no foreign transaction fees — cards that charge 3% per transaction will add up fast over a week. Visa and Mastercard are accepted everywhere. American Express is accepted at most restaurants and shops but not all — bring a Visa/Mastercard backup.

Cash: Carry £20-30 for small purchases at markets or tips, but you may never use it. Some smaller pubs and market stalls are now completely card-only.

Tipping

Budget tip: Premier Inn and Travelodge are reliable budget hotel chains (£60-120/night) with locations across central London. Clean, comfortable, and consistent — not exciting, but you’re not in London to sit in your hotel room.

London Etiquette

Londoners have unspoken rules. Here’s how to not stick out as a tourist:

Pubs

British pubs are the heart of social life. Here’s how they work:

Order at the bar. Don’t sit at a table waiting for someone to come take your order. Go to the bar, order your drinks and food, and pay there.
Don’t tip the bartender. There’s no tip jar. If you want to be generous, say “and one for yourself” when paying — the bartender will add £2-3 to your total as their own drink.
Table service varies. Some pubs have table service via an app (QR code on the table). Some require ordering at the bar. When in doubt, ask the staff.
Last orders: Pubs stop serving at 11 PM (some have late licenses until midnight or 1 AM). You’ll hear a bell ring 10 minutes before last orders — this is your cue to buy your final round.

Queuing

The British queue. Always. Whether it’s a bus stop, a shop, a bar, or a Tube platform — find the end of the line and wait. Pushing in is the ultimate social crime. If someone was there before you, acknowledge them: “After you” goes a long way.

Escalators

Stand on the right, walk on the left. This is the single most important rule in London. If you stand on the left side of a Tube escalator, you will be sighed at, tutted at, or asked to move. Just stand right.

Talking to Strangers

Londoners are friendly but reserved. We don’t make small talk with strangers the way Americans do — no chatting in queues, no “how’s your day?” at the checkout. But if you need directions or help, just ask directly. “Sorry, could you point me toward the Tube station?” works perfectly.

Safety and Health

Emergency Numbers

999 or 112 — Emergency services (police, ambulance, fire). Free from any phone, including mobiles without a SIM.
111 — Non-emergency medical advice (NHS). Call if you need medical help but it’s not a 999 emergency.
101 — Non-emergency police.

Health

Pharmacies (Boots, Lloyds): Everywhere. Pharmacists can advise on minor ailments and sell over-the-counter medicine. Paracetamol (acetaminophen) and ibuprofen cost about £0.40-£1.00 for a pack — much cheaper than US pharmacies.
NHS treatment: US citizens are not covered by the NHS. Travel insurance is essential — a hospital visit can cost hundreds of pounds without it. Buy travel insurance before you leave home.
Tap water: Safe to drink everywhere in London. Restaurants will serve you tap water for free if you ask — don’t feel obligated to buy bottled water.

Common Scams and Pickpockets

London is generally very safe, but tourist areas attract opportunists:

Pickpockets: Watch your belongings in crowded areas — Oxford Street, Camden Market on weekends, busy Tube platforms. Keep your wallet in a front pocket, not a back pocket. Keep your bag zipped and in front of you.
Fake petitions: People with clipboards asking you to “sign for deaf children” or similar near tourist sights. It’s a distraction tactic for pickpockets. Just walk past.
“Found” gold ring scam: Someone “finds” a gold ring on the ground near you and tries to give it to you, then demands money. Ignore and walk away.

Phones and Data

Using Your US Phone in London

Check your plan: Most US carriers (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile) offer international day passes ($10-12/day). T-Mobile’s Magenta plan includes free international data at 2G speeds (slow but works for maps and messaging).
eSIM (cheapest option): Buy a UK data eSIM before you arrive. Airalo, Holafly, and Nomad all sell UK data plans starting at $5-15 for 1-10GB. You download the eSIM to your phone and activate it when you land. No physical SIM card needed.
Wi-Fi: Almost every pub, café, restaurant, and hotel has free Wi-Fi. McDonald’s, Pret A Manger, and Caffè Nero have free Wi-Fi at all locations.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Standing on the left on escalators. I’ve said it three times now. That’s how important it is.
Buying paper Tube tickets. They cost double. Tap your contactless card.
Trying to see everything in one day. London is enormous. Pick 2-3 things per day and leave time for wandering.
Eating only at tourist restaurants. The restaurants on the main drags near Tower Bridge and Trafalgar Square are overpriced and mediocre. Walk 5 minutes off the main road and you’ll find better, cheaper food.
Forgetting to pack a plug adapter. They’re £15 at the airport, £5 at a pharmacy, and £2 on Amazon before you leave.
Only staying in Zone 1. Some of London’s best experiences — Camden, Greenwich, Hampstead Heath, Columbia Road Flower Market — are in Zones 2-3. Don’t be afraid to venture out.
Ordering a “English breakfast” after 11 AM. Full English breakfasts are a morning thing. After 11, order a pub lunch or afternoon tea instead.
Not checking for weekend Tube closures. TfL does engineering work on weekends. Check tfl.gov.uk on Friday night for closures that might affect your Saturday plans.
Using the Tube for very short distances. Covent Garden to Holborn is one Tube stop — but it’s a 4-minute walk. Many central London stations are closer together than the Tube map suggests.
Not carrying layers. London weather changes fast. A sunny morning doesn’t guarantee a sunny afternoon.
